You’re absolutely right Brenda, it’s about fear and urgency. A friend’s elderly father-in-law received such a call where the person on the other end just said “Grandpa? Are you there?” And F-I-L responded “Timmy?” and it spiraled from there. Fortunately my friend was able to stop it before a bank account number was given to prevent “Timmy” from being sent to jail. Wow! It is really difficult to shut down the phone scams originating outside the U.S. I learned many of the ‘loved one’ scams are from overseas.
Very timely and of course well written. I know someone who lost $40k from scammers. It's very sad and that was all she had.
